Hair Extension Terminology Explained

Updated: Mar 18, 2021

WTF do all these extension terms really mean!?

Ever wonder WTF all those hair extension words really mean? Read the breakdown below for an explanation of all the most common terms you hear when looking for your perfect set of hair extensions.

Single-Strand: Hair that is drawn from the source and directly placed into the hair weft. Most hair on the market is single-strand as it is a much faster and affordable production process. However, this means that your hair extensions will be thicker at the top than they are at the bottom. Single-strand hair often only has 30%-40% of strands as the actual length you ordered. For example lets say you order 20” hair only about 30% of the hair you receive will be this length, the rest of the hair will be shorter strands. The hair will often need to be cut in order to even out the bottom so that you hair does not look dead and thin at the bottom.

Double-Drawn: Hair that undergoes an additional process during manufacturing, to remove the shorter strands and produce thick, full bottoms. The shorter strands are removed by hand, giving your hair extensions a more full look and longer life-span. @shedoesmyhair supplies hair extensions guarantee 95% of the strands are the length you ordered.

Double-drawn hair is more expensive than single-strand hair as it goes through a longer production process and is much higher quality hair. You will pay more for double-drawn hair, but the quality, look and lifespan of these extensions is far superior to single-strand.

Virgin Remy: is chemically unprocessed hair. This means that when hair goes into production at our factory it has not been previously altered by colour, bleach, perms or harsh washes. This ensures that the hair is high quality, durable and long-lasting after production.

Cuticle In-Tact: this means that when the hair is sourced all the cuticles are healthy, intact and flow in the same direction. This ensures that the hair is smooth, strong and silky. The hair cuticle looks similar to scales on a snake. When the cuticle is in tact these "scales" all lay flat, in one direction giving the hair a silky, & smooth appearance.
