Hand-tied wefts, beaded-weft hair extensions & invisible bead extensions have quickly become a trend on social media. Now one of the most requested hair extension methods in salon and for a good reason.
The versatility of weft hair extensions make them an excellent choice for any hair type or hair goal. The absence of heat or glue used to install this method makes for quick and clean maintainence, with zero damage to your natural hair.
There are an endless number of ways that wefts can be applied to your hair. Wether you have coarse or fine, thick or thin hair a method of installation can be found to suit your hair type.
Weft Application
- Sew-In Weft: The OG of hair extensions. Depending on your hair texture wefts can be applied in a variety of methods. Curly, coarse hair can be applied by braiding the hair and then sewing the weft into those braids.
This method is not recommended for fine hair as the braiding can cause breakage for this hair type.
- Beaded Weft: This method was created as an alternative to braids as many clients find braids uncomfortable to wear or damaging to their natural hair. Fine, straight hair is attached by creating a base using beads, and the weft is then sewn into this beaded base.

Types of Wefts
The type of weft hair extension installed will depend on your hair type and overall goal. A seasoned stylist will have a method of installing weft hair extensions that is suitable for all hair types. The three main weft hair extension types are; hand-tied weft, machine weft and flat weft.
- Hand-Tied Weft: The most expensive variation of the weft hair extension. This is because the weft is sewn by hand. The benefit of this is that it does not shed as much as a machine made weft and the base is much thinner creating a more comfortable wear. However, hand sewn wefts deliver much less volume per weft than machine made wefts. You would need to layer additional wefts per row in order to get the same volume as one machine weft strand.

- Machine Weft: Hair is sewn into weft by as the name describes, by a machine. This creates a thicker base and a more cost effective piece. It also has the benefit of creating more volume per weft. This type of weft hair extension is perfect for anyone looking to create a thick, high volume look.

- Flat Weft: This type of weft is like a hybrid of the hand-tied and machine weft. It is created by a machine but has a less bulky base than the machine weft. The flat weft will deliver more volume than the hand-tied weft, but less than the machine weft. It is a good substitute for the hand-tied weft if you're looking for more volume at a more affordable price point.

Invisible-Bead Extensions
This is a method used to install wefts where the beads are hidden between the weft for completely undetectable hair extension bonds. This method can be used with any of the weft types described above. It can be used on most hair types. However since the weft will need to be doubled per row in order to hide the beads it is not recommend for anyone with extremely fragile hair or those with slippery hair. The extra weight from the overlapping wefts may cause breakage for fragile hair or cause the weft to slip out to fast if the hair is too slippery.

Maintenance
Weft hair extension methods will require a salon visit every 4-12 weeks for maintenance. The duration between salon visits depends on your maintainence of the extensions and how quickly your hair grows.
The lack of glue or heat used in this method makes maintenance appointments quick and clean, no sticky glue residue! During a maintenance appointment a stylist will move the beads up, securing the weft back into its original place.
Each appointment will take about 45-60 minutes and can cost anywhere from $125-$350.
